Hotel Frank, formerly Maxwell Hotel - San Francisco

This hotel is what you expect from a San Francisco boutique hotel. Not much on amenities, but clean, quaint and well designed. If you're interested in Union Square you can't get any closer for the price.

This hotel was good but my husband and I didn't think how noisy it was being the center of the big city. When we were there they were also in the middle of renevating part of the hotel, not to mention the fire alarm that went off at 11:30 at night. It was just crazy!!! Some trips are just that way though!!

The staff at the Hotel Frank were very friendly and went out of their way to provide excellent service. The first room that I was given was on the 5th floor. Apparently, floors 2 through 4 were gutted but their renovation never completed. The first room often had the odor of sewer gas in the bathroom. To me this indicated either a bad toilet seal or gas leaking from a lower floor. I requested a different room, which was provided. The new room was on the 10th floor and had no odor problems. The bathroom was configured differently and was a bit crammed. The sink was had a shelf directly over it making it very difficult to access the sink. Otherwise the room was fine. A little more attention to detail such as spot paint touch-ups and minor trim fixes would be in order for the whole facility.

The room was nice in terms of design and it was clean. The listing for the room said there would be a hair dryer but there wasn't. No water bottle even in the room which is pretty standard for hotels. No coffee maker which was inlcuded on the list of items in the room. The biggy, water took FOREVER to heat up for the shower. I mean, 5 minutes or more. More money than it's worth in my opinion until they finish with the full upgrade. Plus the keys to the room didn't work properly, kind of a hassle. Beds are pretty comfy but if you are sensitive to a noisy environment, make sure you don't stay here. Unless you are the very top floors above level 7.

My stay was uneventful, repairs the previous reviewers wrote have been completed, room smelled freshly painted but after cracking window it blew out and there was clean air inside the room. I liked the modern decor and comfort of my room and bed was properly situated in the room, water pressure was good -I stayed in 5th floor- I found the front desk very helpful and the suggested surrounding restaurants well above my expectations. It is very close to cable cars but if you want to avoid huge lines show up early and choose off days.

Our only complaint about the hotel was the size of the bathroom in our Jr suite, great sized room but bathroom was so small and all of the shelves were not installed well so things slid off. If that's the worst thing to be said I'd say that's a good thing. Thank you!

I recently stayed at Hotel Frank for a girls getaway and it was great! I had previously stayed at this hotel when it was The Maxwell and liked it then, but they have done major remodeling since then and it is very trendy and cool now. The location is perfect, a block away from Union Square, lots of shopping and restaurants. Also, there is a parking garage right around the corner so if you don't mind parking your car there, you can save a little in parking money.

Overall, I was disappointed in this hotel. In person, it was not as nice as it appeared in its picures. Although the bathroom was clean, there was a stain on the bed sheets and the carpets were dirty. The walls were thin so you could easily hear conversation in the next room. The doors were heavy and slammed shut. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were very satisified overall. The only issues were lack of washcloths and soap. But, they promptly brought some when we called.

The hotel is on renovation and still was great; the new rooms look gorgeous the location super, the people tha work in the hotel very nice.

room size & comfort was great! Friendly, helpful staff. Enjoyed our stay... Visit Lefty O'Douls, just across the street -good food at reasonable prices! Would have liked to see free internet service rather than a charge fee. :(

I really enojyed my stay at Hotel Frank. I was there for one night due to a surgery I was having the next day. The room was very comfortable and I was able to get a good nights rest for my surgery. I really liked the clean and sharp decorations and the bed was a good size. I do think it was a little pricey but for only staying one night, was worth it.

Nice location. Good value and the rooms are nice. Little loud in the morning but they can't control the garbage company. Well worth the stay.

Hotel Frank is an outstanding hotel. It is reasonably priced, a bargain really. The decor is art deco which I really like - very tasteful. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. The location is in the heart of downtown near Union Square in the heart of the upscale shopping areas. The hotel has a restaurant located in the same building and I look forward to eating there daily because the food is fantastic. I will stay at Hotel Frank again.

The hotel is in a terrific location, just a long block from Union Square. Floors 2-4 are still under construction. Gut renovation! But the rooms that are finished are quite nice. Water pressure was a little on the weak side, as was the time it took to get hot water in the shower. But overall, the room has high ceilings, plush furnishings and a very contemporary decor. I would stay here again.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I was even upgraded to a larger room at no charge!

The Hotel was nice for the price. Nice character and right in union square . Me and my wife enjoyed the stay and would stay their again. The only bummer was are showers water pressure you kinda had to be right against the wall, but that was in are room my friends room was different.

we stayed in a jr. suite together with our 2.5 year old & 3mo. old & the size of the room was FANTASTIC!!

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Restaurant service was very slow and food was mediocre at best. Hotel is generally "worn" and needs renovation. I expected much better for the 3 1/2 star rating and price. I had booked 3 rooms. Bad enough that I was dissapointed but also embarrased that I had booked this hotel for 2 associates.

I'm not too sure I like the new remodel style, but the price and location are great. The woman at the front desk was super friendly, and so was the rest of the staff. I'll stay there again next time I'm in town.

Room was great along with the new decor in the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The lobby is a little bland and needs some help but don't let it scare you away from a great location and great clean and cool rooms.

the Hotel was under construction so i give them the benefit of the doubt for the noise etc. Location of the hotel is great right in Union Square. I hear they've raised their prices since i stayed there

Se proprio vi devo dire tutto questo hotel sta nel centro della città sopra ai negozi piu' importanti di san francisco, ma quando vai a prendere l' ascensore (lentissimo) è tutto rotto. Le camere sono molto belle non tanto spaziose però carine. il parcheggio costa intorno ai 30 dollari a notte. Insomma la posizione è stupenda.

Cet hotel est situé à Union square, c'est à dire dans le centre névralgique de San Francisco (cable cars, MoMa, restaurants, magasins ... à moins de 5 minutes à pieds). Nous étions avec un enfant de 2 ans et donc nous avions réservé la suite junior, qui est une chambre très calme et spacieuse. Le personnel est accueillant et vous renseigne très bien. Le prix est plus qu'acceptable pour un hotel situé dans ce quartier. N'hésitez pas ... foncer !!!!

we stayed for 3 night with our family (2 adults and 2 kids). The room was very tidy en well kept, the internet acces was very good. Staff was very polite and helpfull. It had a locker big enough for a laptop. The only thing I found missing were individual lights for both beds. We would stay here again if in San Francisco. It's very near Union Square, cable cars, Chinatown and Hertz (Masonstreet)
