the hotel is fantastic, we were very impressed with the decor, cleanliness, and friendliness of the staff. very efficient..... only one thing, a fab bar, but no domestic beer!

We were conveniently located near the theater and Union Square.We loved Asia de Cuba and the Redwood Room, the restaraunt and bar in the lobby. But,our room left alot to be desired considering the rate. Outdated bath fixtures and weird matress. Hotel was very noisy inside the hallways.

Everything was outstanding - extremely classy, great service, beautiful decor, COMFORTABLE beds, and awesome location - my only complaint is that there was a dirty towel that was left hung on the back of our bathroom door and the bathroom was really small. But despite that I would definitely stay at the CLift again, the staff was more than accomodating.

I've never heard of charging $50 to park at a hotel. Our room was very nice, but I would never stay there again after paying that just to park.

The hotel was beautiful and the room very nice. Unfortunately the bar music rattled our room until 2 a.m. That coupled with the noise from the ice machine and the toilet making this weird belching noise all night long made for a sleepless night. To add insult to injury, housekeeping came by at 8:00 am and began banging on the door. Our wake-up call rang 3 times before they hung up and then a security guard came to the room to "make sure we were ok". Then housekeeping returned and entered without knocking. I suppose if you are looking for a lot of face time with hotel staff you might enjoy this hotel. But if you just want to be left alone, this is not the place for you.

Hotel met our expectations. Hip property. Great bar scene . Bathroom really tight, but not a surprise for a SF hotel.

The hotel was located a few blocks from Union Square. The accomodations were good and the majority of the hotel maintenance was up to par. The hotel walls were a little thin, to where a neighbor called and asked for me to turn down my TV (I had turn it on and it was set to the default level of volume when it turns on). The lobby and bar/restaurant downstairs was very cool. I'd definitely stop by and hang out there even if you're not staying at the hotel. If you're looking for peace and quiet, ask for a room away from the street. I was originally on the 3rd floor with a window to the side street. As soon as I got in there I knew the noise from the cars wouldn't let me sleep, especially since the window was still closed. They changed my room to the 5th floor facing the garden.

I loved this hotel and would definitely visit again. It is so nice to stay somewhere slightly unusual and unique. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The rooms are quite small but there are plenty of lounges to use, but maybe not the most ideal if you have a lot of work to do from the hotel (there is a small business centre too). Unfortunately there were no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms, but free coffee was supplied in the lounge. Breakfast was quite expensive (as it usually is in hotels like these), but there are loads of places to go to that are in easy walking distance, such as Lefty O'Doul's. It was a very enjoyable stay.

There really are no words to express how amazing my stay at The Clift was. Upon deciding to take a last-minute trip to San Francisco, I priced a variety of hotels looking for the best option. I have stayed at a number of different hotels in the greater Union Square area, usually switching off between The Clift, Westin St. Francis, Westin Market Street, or W. I've always been a fan of The Clift, and admire the tasteful decor, and how it truly is a very boutique property (very unique design, yet still functional and fun). Upon checking rates, I found a great price via Hotels.com for The Clift, and decided to book it for two nights. I took the BART into San Francisco from the East Bay, and walked the short distance from the Powell Street station to The Clift hotel. The area is wonderful; located just off of Union Square (roughly two blocks), you pass some interesting art galleries, restaurants, and shops. There are some delicious restaurants within walking distance, and a very conveniently located Walgreens and Starbucks within about 100 meters of the hotel. Check-in was fast and easy; the nice girl at the counter recognized me as a guest who had been to the hotel before, and inquired how things (job, for example), was going. I very much enjoyed the personal touch. The girl kindly upgraded me to a larger room, and asked if I would need any assistance with my luggage. My room was beautiful! Amazing bed (truly one of the most comfortable, more-so than the W's Heavenly Bed), and a very functional workspace. The room was spacious by any standards, especially San Francisco standards, and for two-three people, I never found it cramped in any way. The room included a nicely stocked mini-bar with snacks (not obscenely overpriced, though the Walgreens across the street made it nice to go for a short walk and pick up bottles of water and snacks and not pay hotel prices. Like just about every San Francisco hotel, wireless internet was available for a fee, but I had no hesitatio

Great place to stay! Will stay there again. Great service, bar, food, location, clean....

Loved the bar / dinner scene.. cant be beat if you are an adult on the road(not for kids)... At the same time, the room itself was very plain and not at all in keeping w/ the hotel. also was really let down when i checked into my room and the room next to me still had room service sitting outside its door at 3pm, still there after i got back from dinner, and was there in am... i expected more. if it wasnt for that, the exorbitant rates for water etc. i would have rated higher...

As a frequent traveler I'm quite easy going. This hotel was chosen by a friend who was staying there attending a local convention. The decor is modern dark - no comment one way or another. Check in was by snotty front desk clerk who made it clear they were doing me a favor by staying there. I took a basic standard room - the good - nice bed, nice flat screen TV, fantastic closet - which was twice the size of the bathroom where only one could possibly be in there. Closet lit by bare bulb. Room service prices boarding on outrageous - medium size bottle of water in the room $11.00. (There is a major drug store across the street). You'll need to show your hotel issued ID just to enter the hotel on a busy Saturday night. San Francisco is filled with wonderful hotels that want your business - this version of the Clift may or may not want your business.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night. The staff, particularly the door and valet men were so accommodating and offered some great suggestions for things to do, places to eat, etc. in the area. The decor of the hotel is very sexy and well decorated. It's clean and well maintained. I agree with several reviews I had read before we made the reservation - the only downfall is the bathroom is VERY small.

my girlfriend and i stayed at the clift. the hotel had a lot of character, and the decor was well thought out. it was overall very chic and sexy. the only complaint i have is for the money, the bathroom should be more extravagant than it was. other than that, the staff was very friendly, the bar was classy, and our room was huge. i highly recommend this hotel, especially the loft/suite rooms. and we got a great deal at hotels.com!

The Clift is a chic , sophisticated property. The rooms are well done as well as the lobby. First class bar for after work relaxing. The hotel is not for kids but is great for adults. Enjoy.

Had really high hopes - which were dashed almost straight away by a complete lack of warmth or help upon checking-in. Interesting neighbourhood, especially with the St Francis sharing the same street - glad we didnt turn left out of the hotel after dark - interesting people and places! Had a studio suite which we upgarded to a loft suite when we found we would only be on the 4th floor, even then we only made the 7tth! Definitely a place to be seen but would not recommend it unless you are going to be drinking or clubbing all night. Nice (but very expensive) rooms, forgettable hotel!

This was the first time we stayed at the Clift and it was excellent. The location and ambiance was better than expected...one of the cooler bar/lounge areas we have been to and the rooms were clean, comfortable and very well designed. Lots of style.

they charged $50 + $7 tax to park the car overnight! ouch!

The Clift is very convenient and close to everything. The staff were very gracious and accommodating. The decor is very minimalist, but chic. The bed and bedding was very comfy and cozy. It is one of the few in SF that still have smoking rooms (for my husband) and they keep them very clean and no noticable smoke odor. The one negative point was we booked our room as smoking but when we arrived, they said there were none in our price so we had to pay extra. Also note that the parking is 50.00 a day with in/out privileges.

and seem to pay more attention to the people who come to the hotel bar than the ones who are actually staying at the hotel. The lobby, bar an restaurant have a great design. Rooms a bit disappointing. Great location

We just loved it

felt the room itself was very nice, very trend and cool. thought that the water, room service, parking, etc. was way overpriced. i mean seriously, i $6 for a small bottle of water is insane. the redwood room was as cool as everand the staff was all great. we had a billing error (extra $100 in room service) and they got it taken care of quickly.

The decor, colors, sights, sounds, furniture, art work, and location are all outstanding.

Great service, best hotel bed ever. Location was perfect, lobby and bar area beautiful. Booming nightlife. Bathroom was tiny. Parking very expensive.

Perhaps incorrectly, I expected something more along the lines of a W Hotel experience...a plush comfortable bed and a nice bathroom. Instead the bathroom was mediocre and the bed was anything but plush. On the latter, the mattress and bedding were more suitable for far less desirable hotels. I will never stay there again which is a shame since the design is very modern.

loved the room , the hotel decore ,great location, good service ,only downside is there restaurant food was poor for the price. but I would stay there again and recomend it to my friends

There are all sorts of hidden charges with this hotel. The overnight car rate is insane, room service hard to imagine. After all is said and done, I can't even believe my bill and I am a frequent traveler. They also need improvement in the check in procedures, wasted an hour of my day at least just checking in. Overall assessment - I love the bar, the staff is very nice but you'll spend more on valet and surprise charges than on the room, which incidentally is not that luxurious and quite small. Especially the bathroom which is more fitting of a two star hotel.

My room was one of the largest I've seen in San Francisco. Great ambiance. Short walk to Union Square and shops. Only bad thing was the fact that I had to work during my stay there!

Most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!!
