The Hotel Carlton is a nice hotel and in a good location if you want to be near the major museums. It's right around the corner from the Reina Sofia and just down the street from the Prado. It's also right next to the train station and in between two metro stops. (they go right to the airport) I was there for sightseeing and walked everywhere I wanted to go, including the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, the Rastro, all the museums and plenty of restaurants. The room I stayed in was small, but clean, and offered what I needed with the exception of a coffee maker. The bathroom was huge. Even though my room was directly opposite the elevator and faced the street, I was never bothered by any noise. I dealt with three hotel clerks and two were proficient with English, which helped quite a bit. I did not try the hotel restaurant since there are so many nice restaurants elsewhere. There was no ice machine in the hotel, but one of the guys at the front desk brought ice to my room when I inquired about it. Overall it was a very pleasant stay and if I were to go back alone I'd probably stay there again. I might opt for a hotel with a bigger, more elaborate room if it was a romantic trip for two. Unfortunately that's not likely to happen to me! Bon voyage.

We had two separate stays at the Carlton, one at the beginning and one at the end of our trip. It is walking distance from Madrid's main train depot, the Prado, and many other attractions. The staff was friendly and took good care of us. They gave us tips on the Metro that made our return to the Airport stress free.

Beautiful hotel, decor, just the surrounding area not eye-grabbing or luxurious. The staff was absolutely wonderful, going out of their way to help with directions, ideas, transportation, anything. If you are traveling by train, located a very easy walk from the station; however, it is a fair distance from the airport, equating to a 30-35 euro taxi ride. The Atocha underground station is 5 minute or less walk from the hotel, and there are bus stops just across the street, so if you are street-savvy, can substitute the taxi for one of those. Same underground gives you great contact with all the important sites of Madrid proper. The room itself was a bit warm, but not bad. One drawback was the noise -- walls very thin. Also, maid service in the room was the minimum between nights; ie a little, skinny bar of soap provided, which was a sliver after one night, no automatic replacement.

we chose this hotel b/c of its proximity to the atocha renfe station. the room had wood floors, paneling, and cabintery. It would have looked much more luxurious if it were painted differently. The only compliant is that the bedding really lacked a lot of comfort. The beds were not comfortable and the sheets were hard and scratchy. I wouldn't stay there for a week, but it was great for one night in transit.

The hotel was a reasonable price considering you in the center of the city. However it is quite noisy if your hotel room faces the street. There was a language barrier when communicating with the front desk so bring a spanish translator if you plan on asking for anything.

The location was great. 3 minute walk to the train station. The hotel was clean and the service was too. While the bathroom was recently remodeled and roomy, the shower was extremely small and tight. The room next to mine had a shower and a tub which probably made it more spacious. How do I know? the connecting door was so thin that I could hear the person talking on the phone and the water splashing... Altogether, the hotel was very good and convenient. I would stay there again.

Great location - two blocks from train station, three blocks from Metro, easy walk (5 to 15 minutes) to the three big art museums. Supermarket one-half block away. Dining in the area was mostly informal (expanded bars). Renovated room. Bed was two twins together rather than double and was hard. Bright, clean, modern bath, but drinking glasses obviously cleaned by the maid instead of a dishwasher. Very helpful staff - fluent english. Stayed five nights and would stay again.

I visited Madrid as a solo tourist. Wanted to be close to Atocha metro station since I was going to Barcelona by AVE at night so needed a place to store my luggage after checkout. The hotel was only a couple blocks from Atocha and Reina Sofia museum. Any other destinations would be a hike (which I prefer anyway), but doable. There was a 24hr store down the street which came in handy after my midnight stroll. As for the room itself, the only thing outdated was the TV. The bathroom was new and modern (rain shower head and contemporary sink). The bed was comfortable enough ( I prefer firm mattresses so it worked out). I had a view of the city (in the direction was Atocha) so that was good. In short, great location IF you want to be close to the main metro/train station (and the museum district). But if you are seeking a location within walking distance from royal palace or plaza mayor, then you might want to consider else where.

This hotel was well worth the money spent! The staff was EXTREMELY sevicable and gracious - they spoke English as well as Spanish and helped point us to restaurants and local sites. The breakfast buffet was quite good (not great variety, but the quality of the food was not lacking). I had it included in the rate, so I went everyday. The dinner was okay as well, but you could do better outside and get more value The hotel is on a busy street so if you open a window and you are facing the street, the noise will be very loud, but with the windows closed, its not bad at all. Also, the wall are thin, so you can hear your neighbors in the next room, but this didn't really bother me. Lastly, the A/C only blew warm air - this maybe because it was wintertime when I went and it was cold & maybe they had the A/C "off" (it didn't bother me that much, so I didn't follow up), but it is worth noting. The rooms were a good size and had a desk, a sitting area and two closets as well as good drawer space. It has a minibar but no microwave. The TV was older (i.e. not flat screen or plasma) & does not have a great lineup of channels [if you speak only English, you will only have either pay-movies (3 each month) or news channels (CNN, SkyNews, BBC, etc) to choose from] but it otherwise worked fine. The wireless internet was pay per day usage and worked fine too. All in all, the room was nicely decorated, and other than the TV, had a modern feel to it. The location is near the Prado area and is two blocks away from the city Metro station (which is marvelous in and of itself compared to NYC's subways!), so the local was good. The security in the hotel is also good as they have a security guard in the front at all times to greet (and check out) everyone coming in. The 2 elevators are VERY tiny (they barely fit 4 people), but they are realtively quick and are modernized. Overall, I would definately recommend this hotel and I would return.

We spent 2 nights at the Carlton. It was extremely convenient to the Atocha Rail Station and a short walk to the Prado, Thyssen and almost across the street from the Reina Sophia art museum. We took the subway from the airport to the end of line 8... Nuevo Ministerios, and then transferred to the Renfre suburban line for 2 stops and got off at Atocha. It is a 2 block walk from there. It was faster and cheaper than a cab. THe staff spoke English very well and were very knowlegeable and pleasant. The breakfast was great. The only problem is that it is on a busy street and the traffic never stops. Maybe a back room would be quieter. Thursday night was fine but Friday night was much noisier as Madrid really never sleeps!

We booked the Expo for our one night in Valencia. It is not too far from the center of town, and all Cab drivers know it and how to get there. The room was fine, clean, and the bathroom was good as well. The hotel staff could have been a bit more friendly, it almost seemed like they didn't think we were good enough to be there(off-putting). Know your Spanish in Valencia, you'll need it.

Pictures can be deceiving...they make the room look much bigger than it actually is and the size of the beds! Overall its a great loation, right next to the main train station, so when your traveling and tourist like we were its a great location. Plus its easy to tell taxi's to drop you off at the train station, they all seemed to know where that was. We were disappointed with the staff however, they seemed to have to help us rather than wanting to help us. Also, their directions were horrible, about a block away usually means 4 to 5 blocks. The beds were tiny, I have never seen any beds in any hotel room in America that small, (maybe thats normal for Europe). The bathroom doors don't have locks which can be embarrassing depending on who your sharing the room with!

The main activity for tourists in Madrid including tour bus terminals are on Gran Via. This hotel is about a 10 minute taxi ride from that point. Other than the inconvenience of this distance, we were extremely satisfied with the hotel, the size and cleanliness of the rooms and friendliness of the hotel staff. The room we got was as spacious as an average hotel room in the US, and yes the air conditioning works very well also.

The hotel was nice for the price. Its located in an "ok" area Theres a few bars, mcdonalds, burgerking and a 24 hours shop nearby but its quite far from the main bits of the city. The underground is great tho so if you want somewhere nice and clean to stay on a budget defo go here, then just get a 10 trip metro pass for 8 euros then you can go all over. the metro is really good and its the quickest easiest way to get about. the nearest metro stop to this hotel is Palos de la Frontera. one fee on the metro will cover you for as many changes as needed. would go back if i ever went back to Madrid.

The Hotel Carlton exceeded all expectations. I was traveling for leisure, and was not expecting much, but I was upgraded to junior suite and the room was simply charming. They really took care of detail. A coffee machine and tea of different flavors, the bathroom had everything from a razor kit to soap, it was very nice. Although I had returned to Hotel Carlton for a second visit and received a standard room and it was small, not as quiet, and didn't have the coffee machine, but it was clean and functional. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The Hotel Carlton really impressed me.

The room is fine: nice sized bathroom and the air conditioning works great. The staff speaks English and is very helpful. The hotel charges 4 euros for 30 mins of internet use. It also seems very secure as guests need to be buzzed into the hotel by the desk clerk after hours.

The staff was exceedingly polite and helpful. The hotel had a distinct "new" ambience to it. The room, facing the street, was quiet, clean, and large. The hotel was near the Metro (subway), the bus stops, and the Atocha Railway Station. We had to catch a train to Cordoba from Atocha, and we could pull our luggage two blocks, saving cab fare! We stayed for two nights and as English only speaking persons, found the staff to be very helpful - this is not always the case while traveling in Spain. This is a good place to stay if want to visit the museum district. Metro stop and a 24h supermarket are within a very short distance. Taxi fare from the airport was around Euro 32.00. Hotel room was comfortable but do not count on air conditioning working when most locals would rather have the heat on. For us the room was simply too hot and we had to open the windows to get cooler air, but then street noise is a significant problem which can only be cut down by closing the metal shutters thereby blociking the view. Thus this option is only good during the night when you are ready to retire. The two elevators are VERY small and so is the in-room safe. Overall, we were satisfied with our stay.
