I think the rating and the price of the room exceeded the true quality of the hotel. The location was fine, we were close to all the major transpotation in and out of Venice. The front desk was some what helpful with information. The room cleaniness was a problem. Althouhg the bed was done, the glasses were not cleaned. When I called to have ice sent to the room there was a charge for it. Seemed petty considering is a four star hotel.

Nice hotel on the Grand Hotel. It is literally a 5 min walk across the bridge from the Sta. Lucia train station. The only downfall is that if you do bring a lot of luggage, it's a real challenge to carry the luggage up and over the bridge. The hotel was clean. Very nice lobby area. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was typical assortment of prosciutto, salami, cheese, pastries and cereal. The room was a good size, but our bathroom was very small. The shower was the size of a shower in a cruise ship. Room was clean. The beds did not provide much support, and the walls were a little thin. However, overall I enjoyed the hotel because of its proximity to the shops/restaurants by the Train Station. Also very close to Vaporetto water bus stop.

We stayed two nights at the Carlton the end of July. We were looking for a Hotel that was close to the Train Station. Read some good and bad comments, but also new several of the better tour groups use this hotel. So we gave it a shot. Our room was a little larger than I invisioned. And the bath was also larger than expected. A/C also worked great (95F during the day). Breakfast was good. Asked for soft pillows and they were delivered promptly. I would definitely stay there again.

When we purchased the room, it said we were going to be facing the Grand Canal, when we arrived to the hotel we got a room facing the back of the building, immediately we went to ask what happened and they said that there was nothing they can do. Following the service, let's not even go there, not very kind or helpful in any kind of way. We had to purchase this deal they have to get internet and movies, which wasn't very economic and had an incident which again they couldn't Fix! We would have thought for staying in a junior suite something would be included besides breakfast and that they would try to accommodate us with all the issues we had.

This hotel is on the Grand Canal and across from the train station. There is only one bridge to cross with luggage so that was huge plus. No air conditioning, we were burning up the two days we stayed. The rooms are very small, and the beds are typical european concrete. No internet access for laptops even though they advertise up front and stated they had it. The cables are in the room, but it does not work. I was told by a rude front office desk man named "Franco" that Venice is not a "business city" so if I wanted internet access I would have to go across the street to the internet cafe (hello identity theft) so they gave me some keyboard to hook up to the tv to try a web tv service for 5 dollars a day as a last resort. Didnt work either. I told one personel up front about it so to get credit to my room, and they said no problem they would take care of it. Well at 5am on Monday am as we were checking out/leaving to catch our flight, "Franco" literally chased me out of the hotel screaming at me that I owed him ten euro for the internet service that was not even accessible. I told him it did not work and we could not use it but he persisted in screaming at the top of his Italian lungs at 5am- I told him what an embarrassment he was making out of himself and the hotel- especially since I did not owe him that money because the service was broken, and we unfortunately had to use the internet cafe. I had the water taxi leave as we did not want to miss our flight- I told Franco I had no problem giving money to someone if I owed it to them. He proceeded to scream at us for two minutes as we pulled away. I have never experienced anything like this before in all of my travels. I ended up giving the ten euro to the taxi driver that had to put up with the yelling- and I told him it was all about principle. We also only had toilet paper and towels right as we checked in, and had to call down to get the room cleaned and for more toilet paper. SO, if you prefer location and don't care about service, this is your hotel. The location is excellent as it's right across from the train terminal. But if you want servi

Beautiful hotel with perfect location just across from the train station and an easy walk to the bus station (for ride back to airport). We were pleasantly surprised a full breakfast buffet was included, which was excellent. We wouldn't recommend the promotional boat ride to Murano glass works. You go into one room watching two men prepare glass, and then you're escorted to a very expensive gift shop. They provide a boat ride directly from the hotel, but left us off on the opposite side of the city upon return. We had no idea where we were, but luckily took a map to figure it out (near the hospital).

Great hotel and a great location. Breakfast was wonderful. However, for the price we were paying, the AC should have been on regardless of the time of year. When we asked about the AC, we were told that it is not Mid-May yet, therefore, the hotel does not turn it on. It was hot in the room during the day and difficult to sleep at night. So, if you are planning on staying here, make sure it is after Mid-May or very cool outside.

This hotel is situated very close to Piazalle Roma (main bus transport drop off from airports) and right on the Grand Canal. About 15mins walk to the Rialto and 25mins to St Marks Square along the main shopping streets. The time flys by and you can stop for coffee in one of the many restaurants. Bring some good walking shoes. The water transport system is very easy to navigate. Stick to the public system to reduce costs. Good variety of food available to suit all tastes. Hotel Carlton is a very relaxing hotel with friendly helpful staff. We travelled in January and the restaurant for evening meals was not open but with so many restaurants close by it did not present a problem. All staff appear to be multilingual and skipped from one language to the next without difficulty. Rooms were typical Italian, well kept and clean with good service. The room we received had a poor view and we requested a change and immediately received a new room with courtyard view. Breakfast served between 7.30am and 10.30am. Wholesome buffet with friendly busy staff. Recommended.

For the price we paid (during rainy season) it seems that they could have popped for a larger room. Still, the location is great, and the service good. However, do NOT under any circumstances take them up on the "free boat ride to Murano". They will take you to an agreed-upon glassmaker and take you on a high-pressure "tour", resulting in much higher prices than you would have paid on your own if you had just taken the vaporetto by yourself. Afterward, they will not return you to your hotel, but rather dump you off at the nearest vaporetto stop (in our case, in a driving rain). Tourist beware!

It was beautiful. The buffet breakfast was plentiful and good and the restaurant food was good but a bit pricey as is most of Venice. Literally across the canal from the train station, so it's easy to find. And it's two bridges away from the Island's bus station. But we'd forgotten that in Venice, we would be carrying our luggage across bridges, and the bridge between the train station and this hotel is especially high. (Lesson to self: pack light to Venice!) For the money, this hotel seemed a bit worn and tired. On our first visit, our room faced a non-descript courtyard but was quiet. On our return, our room faced the canal-beautiful but noisier than expected. The buffet breakfast was generous and included scrambled eggs, ham, cheeses, toast, pastries, fruit, cereal and yogurt.

We moved to this hotel from a truly 5-star hotel in Venice. In comparison, this is maybe a 2 or 3 star hotel -- certainly not 4 stars. The rooms are pretty tiny. The air-conditioning did not work in the first room they gave us. The second had a strange odor. The third was acceptable, however, the instructions for the in-room safe were missing, and the staff couldn't figure out how to set the combination (I finally figured it out on my own). It is convenient, however, to both train and bus transportation, as well as to water-taxis and vaporetti to get to the heart of Venice.

Everything was great about the hotel itself. But just because someone is staying in the Hotel Carlton doesn't mean they wish to be financially irresponsible. Example: we need to get to our cruise ship and the staff said we had no other option but to take a water taxi because it was too far to walk. Cost 60 euros (about 90USD). When we arrived at our cruise ship we learned that almost everyone took the "public" water bus for about 5 euros a person. We wern't very happy that they assumed we wanted to waste our money.

Our rooms were located off the inner courtyard and were both quiet and spacious. The staff at the hotel were excellent, both helpful and friendly. Having arrived on an early flight, the hotel was able to store our luggage whilst we went out for lunch and familiarised ourself with Venice. Gondolas were available outside the hotel and it was a short walk to the vaporetto stop. Hotel staff were also able to arrange trips to Murano. The buffet breakfast was plentiful and the hotel has its own restaurant offering a good selection of local specialities. At the end of our stay we were able to leave our luggage and enjoy our final morning in La Serrenissima! Bit concerned because of a couple of reviews but ... Great hotel. Convenient for transport options. 5 mins from Piazzale Roma bus station. Opposite (over the Grand Canal, bridge beside hotel) train station and Ferrovia water bus stop. Warm welcome from English speaking staff who presented us with a map and explained details about the Hotel, which water bus pass to buy, which water-bus to use, the main sites and how to get there etc. The entrance and lobby of the Hotel is beautifully ornate. The hotel fronts onto the Grand Canal and opposite the Train Station. The promenade can be quite noisy from early to late. Our room was excellent, triple superior, quiet at back of Hotel. Very clean. The double bed was two single beds pushed together. Plenty of towels and replenished daily. Bit of building work but was unobtrusive and didn't inconvenience usl. Took the good look of the front of the Hotel. Breakfast was superb continental buffet. Very attentive staff kept replenishing the buffet and our coffee. Drinks in the bar were expensive. Delivery by boat obviously adds to costs. Area around Hotel is a much quieter than the areas around Rialto and San Marco so much more relaxed in the evenings. Definitely would stay here again.

Then you get on the upper floors and everything seems a bit old and daggy and smells of toilet and disinfectant waft throught he hallways. That's a bit unpleasant. The small standard rooms however were decorated in typical venetian style and were clean. The room was decorated nicely, and the towel bar/warmer was a pleasant surprise. It is very convenient to the train station basically across the canal. It is a distance to the airport, a bus ride and a short walk. Desk personnel all spoke some English which was very appreciated by me since my Italian consists of very basic phrases. If you are taking a cruise the hotel is not close unless you travel to the port by water taxi, which cost us 80 euros. Overall it was good but still too expensive.

The breakfast buffet is extensive and filling. The front desk staff are helpful and informative, a mine for local tourist information. My room faced the Grand Canal with shutters keeping out the glaring sun during the afternoon. Watching the boats go by is tremendously relaxing. The downside is the noise at night when the sidewalk harmonica player is singing off key, boat traffic does stop round about midnight.
