Citadel Halifax Hotel - Halifax

Very central - easy walk to many of the prime features. Good parking arrangements. Excellent reception and good service. Spacious, comfortable and clean room. Good restuarant at reasonable prices but drinks expensive. No opportunity to try facilities, but appears to be well provided. Friendly staff. Overall a comfortable and well situated hotel and reasonably priced for a city centre.

The hotel is very close to the scotia square, museums and other halifax attractions. Very polite staff. Got a free upgrade to the executive suite :) There was no wireless in the room that I stayed but the staff gave me an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. Overall, I had a very pleasant stay.

The customer service was outstanding. During check in, we were informed that a charge of $1.13 per local call was to be applied so that incurred an additional $70 to the bill, which was terribly inconvenient. Otherwise, it was a pleasant hotel and close to shopping centers.

The Citadel is fairly well positioned on the edge of downtown Halifax. It also has the advantage of being close to the linked up pedways and malls which run from the Sports centre to the casino on the front. Ideal for inclement weather. Not quite so good if you are not up to handling inclines as it's downhill all the way to the sea front hence a fair hike on the way back. The Citadel gives the impression of having been quite a stylish place (internally at least) in the past, but it has now become rather "frayed at the edges" and badly in need of renovation in the public areas at least. Some renovation has been taking place but there were no obvious areas where this had been completed. Rooms were better than the public areas, in that they were clean and reasonably fresh and didn't convey the same tired look of the public areas. Staff/service was variable in quality, which in our experience is unusual for Canada where service tends to be very good though one always has the impression there's a hand out looking for a tip at every turn. When we arrived, after check in time, the room was not ready and it seemed to be treated as an every day occurrence and the best estimate of when the room would be ready was "it probably won't be too long". It was well over half an hour before we got a room. All in all I got the impression that the place needs a good shake and some money spent if it's to return to the standard that the cost of the stay indicates.

I booked this hotel because it included wireless internet in the package. Imagine my disappointment to discover not only was wireless internet at an additional cost, but my room being at the end of the corridor there was no reception at all. This serious inconvenienced me in my business trip to Halifax.

Had a room on the ground floor that was dark and dank. Service in the restaurant was friendly but somewhat incompetent. Food was nothing to write home about - lobster roll might as well have been made of fish. Rather cold, business-looking area - quite near the Citadel and wharf, but completely lacking in any short of view or charm. Beds were sunken in the middle, room was cold with no temperature control. Would not recommend it to anyone.

Clean comfortable hotel within easy walking distance of the Halifax Citadel and the pedestrrian way along the harbor. They did charge $9 for parking which was the only time in our 18 day tour pf Maine, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia that we had to pay to park (including a downtown location in St. John's.)
