Das Hotel ist ein guter und angenehmer Platz zum Übernachten, das wars aber auch schon. Das soll nicht heißen, dass ich nicht zufrieden war, nur soll man nicht zuviel erwarten (Gut was ist ein Hotel auch anderes als ein Platz zum Übernachten) Frühstück ist relativ minimalistisch gehalten, aber dafür hat es ein Kino direkt nebenan und das Hotel macht optisch wirklich was her.

Schlechter Hotelservice und sehr unfreundliche Hotelmitarbeiter vorallem am Empfang Zimmer sind okay für zwei Nächte ausreichend Da das Hotel schon ziemlich abgewohnt ist war die Sauberkeit des Zimmers okay Für Aufenthalt mehr als zwei Nächte zB Urlaub nicht empfehlenswert da auch ziemlich weit weg von Sehenswürdigkeiten gelegen man muss den Bus nehmen und es sind doch ganz schön viele Stationen zum Zentrum

Bei der Anreise wurde uns ohne Erklaerung ein minderwertiges, nicht sehr sauberes Zimmer gegeben. Aufgrund meiner Beschwerde haben wir dann am naechsten Tag (!) unser gebuchtes Zimmer bekommne, an dem es nichts auszusetzen gab. Das Fruehstuck ist recht einfach, nicht viel Auswahl, aber es fuellt den Magen. Das Hotel liegt sehr zentral; Van Ness Ave liegt direkt and der Buslinie. Und die meisten Sehenswuerdigkeiten sind von hier einfach zu erreichen.

Das Personal war sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Die Lage des Hotels ist optimal, un die San Francisco in allen Richtungen erkunden zu können. Ärgerlich ist das Frühstücksreglement. Um Punkt 9:30 wird alles abgeräumt, obwohl kurz zuvor man fuer einen Frühstücksplatz anstehen musste.

The Opal is located in walking distance to many of San Fran's attractions. With Mel's Diner attached to the lobby area, and a continental breakfast service, grabbing a coffee, snack or quick meal is convenient. The rooms are clean but not fancy, and the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the city. The only complaint we had was noise, but that's to be expected in an older building on a busy street. I'd stay there again.

I would never stay here again. The room was dirty and when I opened the drapes to look out, there was someone sleeping on the sidewalk. The street noise along with the unclean room kept me up the entire night. Not knowing the area, when it stated it was 5 blocks to Union Square I thought that would work, but those 5 blocks put you in a very bad area. I will say they had a nice continental breakfast which was the only saving grace. If you like camping you will like this hotel.

The Opal is an older hotel which is still in pretty good condition, it is cool because it gives you a vintage feeling. The rooms are clean and the bed was very comfortable. The location is centralized so you are not that far from any part of San Francisco. I would definitely stay here again!

The hotel staff was very nice. We got to San Francisco and stopped in the starbucks just down the street and booked our hotel from there. We got to the hotel about 20 minutes later and were able to get to our room within 5 minutes. The hotel is walking distance to the california trolly turn-around and other public transportation. and minutes from union square and china town.

This hotel was certainly comfortable and had vintage charm; however, parking was a nightmare. The hotel charges close to $30 per day, which is unreasonable in my opinion and street parking is difficult to find and difficult understand if you are not from the area. If you're using public transit, it would be fine. The room was cozy and comfortable, but pretty small (with the exception of the extra large bathroom). All in all, we had a good stay here.

Overall I would stay here again because I liked the location. When I got in, the hotel parking was all booked up so I had to park across the street, and the clerks at the front desk could use a refresher course in customer service. I walked up to the counter and the gentleman took about 1 minute to even address me and even then all he said was..."OH!" was he expecting me to greet him? Later that evening we were going to walk a few blocks to a pub and needed a map, we waited at the front desk for 10 minutes because he was helping another guest. I've worked in hotels before, it is gracious to excuse yourself to the people you are helping to simply ask another person if they needed anything. The bed was very comfortable, but the room was very small! I didn't mind as I didn't spend much time in it.

Not knowing quite what to expect, our room at the Opal was very nice. Obviously modernized in the recent past, the bathroom was spacious and clean, the bed comfortable and the room in general was bright and cheerful. There are restaurants and public transportation nearby.

The Opal at Van Ness is well worth a stay. The price is very easy on the wallet in comparison to others out there. It is a well maintained hotel. The Opal is located within walking distance of many different attractions: Japantown, Chinatown, Nob Hill, etc. Don't expect much from the breakfast; it's your standard toast and cereal affair. Not to fret though, there is a great diner next door. I would highly recommend the Opal if all you need out of your hotel is a place to stay that is clean and inexpensive.

Although I enjoyed interaction with the polite,friendly staff at The Opal, I must confess an unpleasant run-in with bed bugs colored my whole experience at this hotel. Luckily, I identified the bed bug bites soon enough (decent to excellent internet connection made research possible) and The Opal's efficient staff moved me to another room. If it were not for this incident, I believe I would have been satisfied with The Opal. However, this is not the case, and I will not return.

The hotel was only several blocks away from Union Square and the trolley to get down to the wharf. However it is a terrible area for parking. We tried calling the hotel as we drove into the city to see where to park and they never answered. They told us when we checked in and already paid to park somewhere else. Room was clean and decent sized. Less than two minutes into my shower the water turned freezing and i was stuck with shampoo in my hair. But it was worth not paying the extra money to be closer to the water.

I had read other reviews on The Opal, and some of them not so good, so I had low expectations. The hotel staff was very friendly and accomadating. The room was very clean and spacious enough not to feel cramped. The heat in our room did not work, and the staff promptly brought a space heater that did the trick! For the price of our room, it was great!

Room was ok for the money. Negative: Continental breakfast had a long queue every morning. Breakfast was good tough. Room smeled some mold odor. Free internet only wired. Too little water flow in the bath tube. Positive: Location, Reception and Room Services, Overall clean and well maintained.

Great room for the money. Bus to Fishermans Wharf just outside the hotel. Breakfast was busy but great. Mel's Diner adjoining the hotel. Will stay there next trip to SFO!

the negative was all the homeless people hanging around the hotel my wife was afraid to go out by hereself bathroom was small room and hotel had an old smell keep the window open, everytime I walked by the hotel desk a quest was complaining about somthing but for the price and location it was not bad, I might stay again because of location and price

THIS IS THE WORST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED AT IN MY LIFE I COULDNT BE MORE DISAPOINTED IN THE MONEY I SPENT I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET A JUNIOR EXECTUTIVE SUITE BUT I GOT A SMOKIN ROOM WITH A DIRTY BATHROOM SMELLY SHEETS NO SOAP TO WASH UR HANDS CRUMBS AND OTHER CRAP ON THE FLOOR THE KEY KEPT UNPROGRAMING ITSELF SO I MAID ABOUT 6-9 TRIPS TO THE FRONT DESK THE WONMAN AT THE FRONT DESK WAS EXTREAMLY RUDE SHE BEHAVED AS IF I WAS BOTHERING HER LIKE I WAS DOIN THIS INTENTIONALY OVER AND OVER I ABSOLUTELY HATED THIS PLACE I WOULD NOT WISH THIS UPPON MY WORST ENEMY

There was a funny smell in this hotel. The receptionist working the friday evening shift was rude and they hold $50 on your credit card when you check in and they dont release it until a week after. A policy that I didn't know about before I checked in.

Had never really been to san francisco and it was a little hard to locate it at first but it was not that far from many of the places that we wanted to go. the room was kind of small but it was nice and was at a prettey good location. had to pay about $25 per night for parking ant the parking garage was pretty small but we felt safer leaving the car in the parking garage than outside on the streets. overall we had a really good stay ther and would definately go back!

The hotel was beautiful, staff accomadaqting, check in fast. You must use your hotel key to open the main entrance door,but they are quick to buzz u in if you are rummaging for your key. 24 hour coffee and tea in lobby, didn't wake up for the "breakfast buffet' but I bet it was more than just toast. Room big and comfy, decor plain but not tacky or old--classic. Plumbing made lots of noise and almost kept me up at night, didn't care enough to move. If you sleep light ask for a room away from the street. The neighborhood is on the edge of the tenderloin. If people of color scare you in general, maybe you should stick to the marina. Otherwise, ladies travel with a buddy to feel more secure and be prepared to tell loud guys to screw off. (I'm a 27 y/o lady and felt fine). Literaly blocks from thai, vietnemise, tacos, sushi, pizza slices and seedy and club like bars. I live in Sf and loved this hotel for a rendevous.

Super clean, very friendly staff, great local, next to movie house and near good food, stay on lower floor & use stairs as the one & only elevator is slow. I upgraded for a Junior suite but room itself was large enuf & went was unused. Price was great epecially to be on Van Ness Street.

My girlfriend and I were very impressed with our stay. We paid next to nothing but got a lot out of it - the hotel staff was not only very nice but very helpful as well, and they were able to help us plan our sightseeing. Our room was perfect for two people: cozy and clean. I know some people want a huge room when they go away, but I personally don't care - the room was big enough for us, and the bathroom had character (sculpted sink, old-fashioned light fixtures). The hotel itself was attached to Mels Drive-In, a local diner chain - that was where the room service was available from too. Directly across the street was Tommy's Joynt, an AWESOME barbecue place. Finally, with close proximity to Japantown and many MUNI bus stops, it was really easy and safe for us to get around the city and avoid Tenderloin, which seems to be a problem for some tourists (we didn't have a problem at all - just don't act like a tourist!). The Opal really surprised us all-around.

My family was very pleased with the hotel, it's location, and friendliness of the staff. However, the shower in my room did not have warm water. Luckily, I was with other family members who had another room so I was able to use their shower so I did not need to make a big deal of it. I am sure the staff would have easily accommodated me if I had told them I needed a new room.

Very friendly front desk. Conveniently located in interesting part of downtown UCSF, off the beaten tourist path. Elegant decor. Charming ambience. Only complaint: shower drain drained slooowly.

my boyfriend & I were just looking to getaway.. we obviously had a budget; we were both 18! when we checked in, we didn't expect to like our room so much. we had a view of Van Ness Ave which isn't that bad compared to having a view of the back of the hotel. the king size bed was comfortable & more than enough for the two of us. this hotel was really cheap & has a fairly reasonable rate. you can't really expect much out of a $70/night room. their breakfast was okay. the location is very ideal. its close to the wharf, downtown, chinatown, everywhere. we used buses, taxis & cable cars for transportation which was very accesible from the hotel. we didn't bother renting a car since parking was a bit pricey. the only thing we didn't like was when we asked for housekeeping services, they didn't really clean. they just fixed the sheets & replaced towels.. they didn't clean the floors very well; I vomitted all over them.
