COVA Hotel - San Francisco

The Hotel would be almost perfect if it would not be situated in such a crappy area. Okay, I must admit, it only takes two blocks to get away from the drug dealers and meth-junkies, but I still felt threatened each time I had to walk in or out of the hotel. Especially at 2 am when I was looking for something to eat away my jetlag around the hotel. Ah yeah, and breakfast also sucked.

Hotel war recht sauber. Die Zimmer waren gut ausgestatttet mit großem LCD-Bildschirm etc. Der Duschkopf schien nur zur Zierde vorhanden zu sein, da beim besten Willen kein Wasser heraus kam. Die Lage des Hotels ist recht zentral. Wenn man die Ellis Str. runterläuft, kommt man an einer Essenausgabe der Kirche vorbei, in dessen Nähne sich viele Junkies, Obdachlose etc. auf einem Haufen aufhalten. Aber bis auf ein paar verbale Provokationen blieben diese friedlich. Der Uringeruch auf der Straße störte nur ein wenig...Neben dem Hotel ist ein chinesisches Restaurant bei dem man viel fürs Geld bekommt. Wer nicht viel Wert auf Hygiene, Freundlichkeit und schnelle Bedienung legt, kann hier Speisen oder Speisen mitnehmen.

Das Hotel verfügt über einen abgesichterten Parkplatz, leider extra Kosten. Die Zimmer sind geräumig und hell, die Betten ermöglichen einen erholsamen Schlaf. Sehr angenehm war; die Zimmerreinigung wird aktiv sobald man den Schlüssel an der Rezeption abgibt. Frühstück (für den Normalverbraucher durchschnittlich gut) mit tollem Ausblick in der oberen Etage. Leider hört man in der Nacht die zentrale Klimaanlage, Ohrenstöpsel können von Vorteil sein. Die Zimmertüren machen keinen sicheren Eindruck.

The Hotel was good. The breakfast was average. The neighborhood was exceptionally poor. The problem was that the rooms tended to be "hot" as in temperature. There is no AC. So the sliding glass door to the outside had to be opened to cool off the room. And this is where there's a problem. The noise from the homeless on the street, cars, sirens, trucks, street sweepers, etc. was excessive. This led to a choice of not sleeping from the heat or not sleeping from the noise. Neither a very good choice.

For the price, hotel was very nice. It had free wi-fi and on-site valet parking with fees. Staffs were friendly and they have shuttle bus that goes to union square and many more sites. The surrounding area may not be the best, but if you go to the right direction, there shouldn't be a problem. The front desk explains quite well about which direction you shouldn't go. I will stay here again in the future.

San Francisco is an amazing city to see for an anniversary and the COVA Hotel did not disappoint. Our immediate impression of the building was that we hoped we had made the right hotel choice, although once you pass the front door to the modern (yet small) lobby, you're greeted with a contemporary fireplace, casual seating and a friendly smile at the front desk. After registering, being briefed on our complementary breakfast on the 8th floor and receiving our keys, the clerk had called us back over. Without us asking, he had decided to upgrade our room to a 1-bedroom suite with kitchen and living room. We're still not sure if he did this just because it was available, or because we booked through Hotels.com (remembering the commercials). We were however, cautioned from the clerk not to travel north on Ellis Ave from the hotel for at least two blocks, as that area was "not safe". Good thing we brought our car, as this left us unsettled about walking. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle to/from popular destinations and at check-in, they gave us a card that listed the times and locations. Parking at the hotel was $25/day. Our room was very comfortable and had all modern fixtures, bedding and furniture with a style one might expect from a higher-end hotel. If visiting the Golden Gate area, we would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Due to positive reviews and price, a friend and I selected this hotel during a three night stay in July. Though it is on the very edge of the Tenderloin, once you walk in the hotel, it's a totally different vibe. It's clean, sleek and very modern in decor. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were decorated nicely, just like the webiste pictures. If you'd prefer a more traditional decor, I'd definitely suggest a different hotel. Due to the location, the hotel provides a FREE shuttle to and from both Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf! This was a HUGE plus for us! The only negatives would be there is no A/C in the rooms, however they do provide portable fans. If you leave your window open, you'll get a really nice breeze at night which makes it quite comfortable. The downside is that you'll hear all the street noise. We were on the highest floor (7th), and we frequently heard sirens which what quite disturbing. You'll also hear street noise in the morning. Due to other reviews, we asked for a room facing the street because other reviewers warned against an alley-side room because of the trash and recycling trucks. I think you'll get noise either way, especially if you have your windows open. I would definitely recommend this hotel as long as you're comfortable with no A/C. As for the location, they let you know where/where not to walk so you should be fine, but thanks to the shuttle, you probably won't need to walk. Oh, this hotel is in what's called Little Siagon so there are a variety of Vietnamese restaurants, but not many regular ones unless you walk a bit. We decided to eat our meals prior to catching the shuttle back to the hotel and this worked out great.

Cova is a nice, modern hotel set in a VERY urban neighborhood. Rooms were comfy, staf was very friendly and helpful, and if you used a taxi and shuttle everywhere you go, it is the perfect location- close to everything! I'm a former San Franciscan, so the neighborhood didn't phase me- but i can see where newbies/tourists might get put-off. I'll be back!

The customer service was outstanding and the rooms were comfortable! I would recommend to others and will be coming back next time I am in town!

When reading other reviews they mentioned the neighbourhood. It wasn't the best after dusk but if you walked to town on the streets parralell to Ellis street then you don't see as many homeless. Great neighbourhood for great asian food. The breakfast was nice as it is on the top floor of the hotel and it caters for all tastes. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was a good size and the beds were soft but comfortable for the stay. Would stay at this hotel again and would recommend to others (just don't be shocked about the homeless numbers-it is a ecomonic downturn out there!)

My 3 night stay at the Cove Hotel was very comfortable. the staff is great! I was greeted with a smile and kindness every day. As many other comments stated, the "colorful" people on the streets, did not approach us in any way. My daughter is planning to stay at the hotel in the near future.

Parking is not included on Hotel Fare, neighborhood definitely needs improvement, wouldn't recommend walking around after dark.

I have mixed feelings about our stay here. Loved the decor in the room and bathroom, very clean and modern. Beds were extremely comfortable and the complimentary breakfast was great. However, the overnight parking is expensive as they are not part of the hotel. The walls are very thin and it almost feels like your neighbors are in the room with you. The area is not good. I would not walk around there. Also the noise from the street is loud. Not sure I'll return. Great staff though.

I assume the rooms have been redecorated, because they seem new. They are all about attention to detail here. The room was beautiful, I could tell thought was given to every fabric chosen. Super comfy pillows (and more than enough of them which is a rare thing), down comforters that were very warm, no tacky art on the walls, stylish (and CLEAN) carpeting very far removed from the Vegas styles I'm used to. Understated minimalistic elegance. Breakfast was a nice surprise. Yes some was out of a box (eggos, instant oatmeal, etc) but they had hard-boiled eggs and fresh bread, yogurt, good coffee. The view from the breakfast room was great! Also I appreciated the workout room, I had a good run on the treadmill while there. Staff was super friendly. Neighborhood... colorful. I never felt in danger, however at times did feel uncomfortable. I am female, and I did walk out at night to get groceries. No one harassed me, it was just my own fear that they would. I was surprised actually that I was left alone because I'm used to getting asked for spare change downtown where I live. That never happened here. The only thing I wish we had was a little fridge.

I only stayed at the Cova one night on New years and chose it becasue it was closer to a dance I was attending. While it is nto Union Square it was a very well done hotel. the rooms very very clean and nicely appointed. I actually think the bathroom supplies were as good as those at Kimpton hotels. Many people have mentioned the homeless about but I did nto find this a problem even at 2 am. Overall it was a pleasant surprise

Much to recommend this property: in-and-out valet parking is cordial and prompt. Knowledgeable and friendly front-desk staff. The free continental breakfast, served in a spotless breakfast room on the 8th floor, was a nice surprise. Some homeless on Ellis and adjoining streets, but no more of a nuisance than in many other SF neighborhoods.

Great service, close to Market St., great staff, terrific breakfast. This place was great for the money and is terrific if you're looking just for somewhere to sleep. The complimentary internet was helpful but if you don't have a laptop they have computers you can use with the internet. A small gym good for cardio and the best continental breakfast I've had at a small hotel. It isn't luxury but it definitely works. The only problems I had were we ordered a King room and got to full size beds but there wasn't a price difference so I didn't worry about it. Also, 2-3 blocks away towards Market St. is where the druggies live and they do the stuff right on the street. However, they never bothered use and if you walk up the street the runs parallel to that same street, you can completely avoid them.

breakfast could be better

When we arrived our vehicle was valet parked with in/out privileges for $25:00, about the same for lots avail for parking in the area.Other hotels are far more pricey (some $45:00) We had concierge service for our bags to the room. The hotel personnel were courteous and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable the bed was comfy and the bedding was clean and comforter was down and snuggle ready. There was a hairdryer, iron and board and complimentary shampoo, lotion and even q-tip and cotton balls along with a nail file. The breakfast, served on the top floor, was more than adequate, with cereals, bagels, waffles, boiled eggs and lots of different beverages. As far as the surrounding district went, we walked several different ways to and from The Warfield, about 6 blocks away, we were not asked for money by anyone and we did not feel unsafe at all, just an area that has a lot of homeless and down and out people but no-one bothered us. We went out to a couple of bars after the concert and once again no-one bothered us. I would stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

The other reviews are right on the money - this is a great hotel in a very sketchy part of town. We choose to walk up Geary from Union Square vs. up Ellis just to avoid the homelessness, druggies, etc. Want to mention that even when we did encounter, we were NEVER bothered by anyone. There was a strong police presence on Saturday night. The room was great - very comfortable, staff kind and accomodating, breakfast more than basic. No air conditioning, but that is typically not as issue in San Fran.

We loved this hotel and especially the service and comfort exceeded our expectations, since it is only a 2* hotel. It is a very good deal and a nice breakfast is also included. The location is very convenient, close to Union Square. Only minor point is, what other also say, a lot of homeless people in the area, but you can avoid this by not walking around too late in the evening and choosing which streets you walk to the center. The hotel staff can advice you on this.

the hotel was great but the street it was on was a little rough there were drug dealers on the street.

The hotel was great all except the neighborhood. Rooms were clean and modern (just as in the picture), they have a nice business center and the staff was very friendly and helpfull. I have travelled quite a bit and I have never seen so much homelessness and prostitution in one neighborhood in all my life! Evidently there is a Hostel and a Soup Kitchen near by so the streets are crowded with people and many seemed mentally or pharmaceutically impaired. That being said, the area didn't feel dangerous or threatening just a bit unsightly and kind of depressing. It is very close to Union Square and public transportation. The hotel also has inexpensive parking onsite. I would not recommend this hotel if you are traveling with children or women traveling by themselves but would be okay for couples/men or if you have rented a car.

I was very happy with the Hotel room we had.Everything looked clean and new, the beds were comfortable and the pillows were awesome. The rooftop breakfast was a great treat. The neighborhood is not so great, alot of shady charachters and unsafe behavior going on at night. And the cost to park your car is a little much (25.00 a day), It would have been nice to have had a discount for Hotel guests. I will most certainly stay at this Hotel again.

Maybe it's the charm of the city, but neighborhoods in San Francisco are small and mixed. You're bound to run into homeless people here and there. But they aren't as aggressive as say those of New York City. Taking that into consideration, The Cova Hotel is fairly good valued hotel in a rather popular city. It has a few other decent hotels as neighbors. There is a hostel next door also. There are also quite a few Chinese establishments around the block, including a grocery store and a laundromat. Union Square, Civic Center and Japantown are all in walking distance. Simple continental breakfast is provided on the top floor with a great view of the city. The rooms are cozy and modern. There is a roomy bathroom and a flat screen in the bedroom. The staff are eagerly friendly and helpful. Elevator is accessible to hotel guests only. So it is fairly secure. There are, however, a few downsides to the hotel. Discount parking would be nice for the guests who are staying multiple nights. At breakfast time, there can be a bit of a rush as there aren't enough tables to accommodate the guests. The rooms has no AC control. You can only turn on the Heat and not the AC. But you can open the sliding doors to let fresh air in, which I don't deem safe for family with children or people with suicidal tendencies. The housekeeping did not bother to empty out all the trash cans if it's not filled up to the top, nor do they replace your shampoos and conditioners unless you threw them out. The shower curtain was a little stained. The empty restaurant at the front could be renovated to keep up with the theme of the rest of the hotel.

Overall, loved this place. Clean, modern and comfortable furnishings for a great price. However, this hotel is located in Tenderloin which we lovingly named Crack Addict Drive. Lots of homeless and druggies walking the streets. For the most part, they didn't bother us and for this Chicagoan, I was hardly jarred but I could see it being an issue for the less urbanized guest.

Hotel was re-build on July.2008, so it was very clean and amenities was also good. But the location of hotel was bad. There were so many street loafers in that area that we were scared; moreover when we reserved this hotel, it's name was "Aire Travel Hotel" so we lost our way. However I recomend you to use this hotel as long as using taxi. You will take $4 from "Powell station"

It could have been a great hotel if it was in a better location. Receptionists should be aware of any renovations bec. I have to go back & forth to make sure that there is such a room...

The hotel is very nicely decorated, beds very comfortable rooms very clean. Style is fusion of Asian and European modern. We were very happy here. The breakfast is excellent. The staff was very nice (they get the door for you). One drawback is the the Tenderloin neighborhood. Lots of homeless people and buildings needing TLC. It was only disconcerting at night. You can find a route around. It was quite convenient to bus lines and to Market and Powell Sts. We would stay here again and again, no question.

I thought that the Cova Hotel was a wonderful place to stay in San Francisco. It was within walking distance of Union Square, and the Civic Center, 3 blocks from the Bart Station. Other reports that I had read about the hotel said that the neighborhood was not that good. I found the neighborhood to be a typical city neighborhood. I arrived at 3am to check in and the surrounding area was fine. The room was updated and clean. There was wireless service as well. The continental breakfast in the morning was great. The hotel was still under renovation at the time of my stay so the central airconditioning was not working and we had to open a window for air. That was the only negative I have about the hotel. I thought that the hotel employees were all very helpful and accomodating. I would definitely stay there again on my next visit.

Good location, but the streets can get a little dicey at night. Lots of homeless/panhandlers. But there are a few bars and lots of restaurants/convenience stores nearby. The hotel itself is nice, and my suite was surprisingly nice. If you can deal with the panhandlers, this place isn't a bad option at all.

I was very impressed with the comfort and security of this hotel at really reasonable rates. We were looking for a hotel in the Tenderloin district because it was convenient for our evening plans. Our room definitly exceeded my expectations -- it was not only comfortable, but had updated styling as well (nice furniture, bed, linens, bathroom). We heard hardly any noise from our room, and the complimentary breakfast adds to the bargain you feel you're getting at this hotel. I definitly recommend it.

Walking into the hotel room was nice. The room was large with natural light, and simple but nice furnishings. The bathroom was clean and the large towels were fluffy. The neighborhood is not very good. The front desk receptionist was pleasant and helpful, but said we couldn't have a AAA discount because our reservation had been pre-paid.

I was very satisfied with this hotel; the rooms were very clean and nice. There was a zen theme to the hotel room, with contemporary furniture and very comfortable beds. The bathroom was also surprisingly very large and spacious. One extra plus was that you could open the door to the balcony for fresh air. The staff and guest services people were all very friendly, with someone to always greet you. Great place, in a great location!

Rooms have been renovated and are comfortable except for the fact that it did not have air conditioning and it was 97 degrees outside. They did attempt to help out by lending us a fan. If it's cool outside it's a great place to stay. Excellent value - nice rooms. The neighborhood is a little "iffy". A homeless center is nearby so there are a lot of homeless on the streets. Wouldn't recommend walking out at night.

The area in San Francisco is rather seedy, but the hotel has great security and the staff are very nice. The breakfast was good with enough choices so every one like what was served.

What an excellent deal! Hotel and rooms are well-kept, nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Quiet, too! Breakfast was plentiful and the staff kept the breakfast room clean and well-stocked, even at its busiest. Staff was friendly and helpful. It is certainly the nicest hotel in this price range I've ever stayed in. Location isn't the best but if you walk one or two blocks up to O'Farrell or Geary and go to Union Square from there, the walk is nicer and has fewer homeless people. My son (9) and I walked up and down Ellis and the two other streets without any problems, but we didn't stay out after dark. After dark, I'd take a cab. Close to all public transportation and has a lot of good ethnic restaurants nearby. I would not hesitate to stay here again. A great place for a great price.

Everything about this hotel was fantastic other than the location. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast had so many options and the breakfast room was on the 8th floor with wonderful views. The hotel room was completely remodeled and very clean. The only complaint that I would have is the neighborghood. It is on a street with a few homeless shelters and there were many people gathered on the sidewalk each day about two blocks away. It is an up and coming neighborhood so that should be expected. I never felt scared just a little uncomfortable walking by the people gathered on the sidewalk. I would definately stay at this hotel again. It is about 4 blocks from Union Square and close to the public transit. Overall it is a great hotel.

Many international restaurants are located in walk distance, and very close to cable car station. The staffs are very friendly and the facilities are very good. The hotel looks like just built or just NEW!!!!!!!!
